Friendly competition: Long Island restaurant joins effort to help struggling competitor
Phil’s Pizza Owner Helps Fellow Pizzeria During Busy Night in Syosset
It was an exceptionally busy night at Phil’s Pizza and Restaurant in Syosset — not just because of hungry customers, but because owner Anthony Laurino was using his own business to help a struggling competitor.
There was no competition in sight, only a friendly and supportive atmosphere between two Long Island restaurateurs.
A Community-Driven Effort
Laurino was participating in an effort started by Jim Serpico of Side Hustle Bread Company, who organizes monthly campaigns designed to help businesses experiencing difficult times.
Each campaign focuses on a different local business in need of support, bringing attention and customers their way through collaboration rather than competition.
Supporting a Longtime Local Staple
The recipient of this month’s campaign was Dominick Onesta, owner of Hi-Class Pizza in Bellerose.
Onesta’s restaurant has been in business for more than 50 years, and he said he was shocked and grateful for the overwhelming outpouring of support from the Long Island restaurant community.
